Before the establishment of Durango, Animas City served as the primary settlement in this area. However, when Animas City opted not to host the railroad line to Silverton, Durango emerged and was founded in 1880. With the arrival of the railroad, Durango flourished and eventually Animas City was incorporated into Durango.
